Chemical Dependency Recovery Maintenance

More often than not, substance addictions start with experimental or social use, whether it is alcohol, illicit drugs, nicotine, or prescription medications. For some people, the substance use becomes more frequent. As time passes, a person may feel the need to use more of a substance to get their desired effect, and soon a person may need it to simply feel “good.”

Chemical addiction symptoms and behaviors include, but not limited to:

  • Feeling the need to use the substance regularly, which can be daily or multiple times a day
  • Having intense urges for the substance
  • Over time, needing more of the substance to get the same effect (tolerance)
  • Making certain that you maintain a supply of the substance
  • Failure to meet obligations and work responsibilities due to using or time needed to recover from using substances
  • Breaking rules/laws or harming others to obtain the substance, such as stealing, lying, manipulating
  • Focusing more and more time and energy on getting and using the substance
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when not using the substance (shaking, anxiety/irritability, depression, stomach upset, tremors, hot/cold sensations, goosebumps, and more depending on the substance)
  • Failed attempts to quit using the substance

If you can relate to any of the above symptoms or behaviors, it may be time to consider Addiction Counseling or Coaching.

As both a Substance Abuse Counselor and Coach in my 2 separate practices (depending on where you are located), I treat clients at the “Maintenance” phase of recovery, where they already have completed either an Inpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program and have been clean/sober for at least 6 months (preferably). For those who experience Opioid Dependence,

I have extensive experience and training working with those who are currently on a Medication Assisted Therapy program (Suboxone/Buprenorphine, Methadone). I am also familiar with 12 Step Work, such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, and Celebrate Recovery.

I also provide Counseling or Coaching for those who wish to quit smoking, as I am a former smoker of 20 years and have never felt better since I quit!

I will address the ongoing symptoms of your addiction and together we’ll structure the time and content of your long-term recovery. If you are currently using substances and need help to get clean/sober, I highly recommend that you start with either a Detox, Inpatient, or Intensive Outpatient Program or perhaps a combination of these programs. You can find local substance abuse programs at: www.findtreatment.gov

I believe that there are many paths to successful long-term recovery that will work with your goals and desires, and ensure you can make the life changes you want to make.
